ART BY DAPHNE NIXON

"If you can see it, then you can paint it."
Born in New York City, Daphne began drawing at an early age. She took up painting in high school in the lovely seaside town of Dennis in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. After winning her first award at fifteen years of age from the "Boston Globe", her art teachers encouraged her to enter the School of Fine Arts at Yale University where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree. At Yale, she won a scholarship to study the old masters in Florence, Italy. There she developed her profound dedication to realism in painting.

Daphne continued her studies in New York City where she won merit scholarships to attend the Art Students League. She studied with Harvey Dinnerstein, Ted Seth Jacobs, and Thomas Fogarty who once taught Norman Rockwell.

The artist's paintings display a marked preference for realism, however, her landscapes are painted in the plein air style as in her Algarve, Portugal, water cave paintings. She has also recently done several oil portraits on commission. While living in Holland for three years, she studied the early Dutch masters and gained inspiration from Vermeer and Frans Hals. In 2005 and 2007, the artist won a grant form the City of Fairfield, California, to paint the 45 structures on the California Register of Historical Resources in Old Town Cordelia, and a series of plein air antique tank houses. As a result, Senator Machado chose Daphne's artwork to represent his district to be hung at the State Capital in Sacramento. Through her paintings, Daphne tries to preserve many disappearing historical buildings and natural resources for posterity.

Daphne's work is represented in private collections in the United States, England, and Holland. She has exhibited at the the Auburn City Hall Gallery in Washington; Napa Museum in California, Boston, New York City; Florence Italy; the Island of Samos , Greece; Amsterdam; and San Francisco. Her murals can be seen in the Las Vegas Hilton Sky Villas, MGM Grand Hotel, Disney's Vero Beach Hotel, and Harrah's Casino in New Orleans. In addition, her murals can be seen on the set of a new movie entitled, "American Primitive". She is looking forward to displaying her work at this summer's Bellevue Museum Arts Fair.

Upon relocating to Gig Harbor, the artist continues to be inspired by the local beauty and is painting local plein air landscapes in oils. She loves to challenge herself to express all she observes using a visual language. Through paint and light, she hopes to encourage others to see, appreciate, and enjoy the beauty that is all around us.
