From as early as I can remember, I’ve had a real love for crafting things with my hands. Even as a kid in So. California I was always building model cars and competing in model-building contests.
I moved to Washington in1974 and immediately began an appenticeship as a shipftter at the local Navy shipyard. I graduated with honors and the love of metalworking - and knowing that I wanted to use these skills for other purposes! I opened my sculpture studio, Sunburst Metalworks, in 1982.
My work is of welded construction, mainly wildlife themes and fine signage as of late, and ranges in scale from personal-size to monumental. I also enjoy creating unusual furniture, light fixtures, anything that can be made of metal. I specialize in stainless steel and bronze fabrication, but for me, whimsical rusty found-object assemblage is the most fun!
So, unlike most artists, I started out by learning the more industrial aspects of the materials first, my artistic skills have been self-taught. I simply have alot of fun doing this work.
I got some advice from a fortune cookie recently: “If your work speaks for itself, don’t interrupt.” Perhaps it will speak to you...
