The sculptural vessels we create in clay are a marriage of traditional vase forms and the extremes to which those forms can be pushed without compromising proportion. Sometimes we focus on the negative space between nestled pieces. Other times we push the positive form itself in ways that occupy space in an interesting or arresting manner.
In pushing size, examining tolerances and stretching structure, we fire with a variety of temperatures and are concerned with results that move toward a more sculptural experiment rooted in the vessel form rather than functional work. Many of the finished pieces are combinations of Raku and/or electric fire stoneware; both hand built and thrown.
OTHER FORMS
Clay is such a versatile medium, that we cant help but have a little fun. Most of our brightly colored work is in porcelain or stoneware, relating to the garden or pieces to use in everyday life. Functional cups, plates, bowls, pedestal plates, etc. give us some breathing space in between the hurdles we have to overcome with the sculptural work. These are made relaxation, imagination and pure joy.
